The Doctor of Environmental Management (DEM) is a prestigious follow-up professional study for people who want to manage environmental issues at a strategic level. It is based on the knowledge that decisions about water, waste, landscape, forests, food security or emergency risks have legal, economic, safety and social consequences at the same time. The program develops the ability to combine these perspectives, work with uncertainty and propose long-term sustainable solutions for organizations, territories or public policies.

It is intended mainly for senior managers, heads of environmental and safety departments, representatives of local governments and public administration, consultants, project leaders and experts who coordinate several actors. It is beneficial for professionals from industry, energy, forestry, water and waste management, the food chain and nature conservation. It will be used by those who need to defend priorities, set up a system of responsibilities and transfer professional knowledge into a strategy, investment decision or crisis plan.

The study plan connects environmental law of the Slovak Republic and the EU with ecological ethics, landscape, forest ecosystems, quality of water resources, waste management and consumer health protection. The topics of environmental risks, accidents and safety support preparedness for events with a large impact. Criminology and criminology in environmental science expand the view to include the prevention, documentation and organizational conditions of environmental unlawful conduct. Leadership, teams, motivation, coaching, crisis communication and GDPR create the managerial framework necessary to implement change.

A strategic level of environmental management requires working with a longer time horizon and with consequences that cannot always be quantified immediately. Decisions about technology, supplier or land use can affect resource consumption, legal liability, operational resilience and the relationship with the community. The DEM therefore supports scenario thinking, the creation of indicators and the management of a portfolio of measures. The ability to distinguish the formal fulfilment of obligations from actual risk reduction and to set up control so that improvement becomes part of normal management decision-making is important.
