The Master of Environmental Management (MEM) is a prestigious professionally oriented study focused on the management of environmental impacts, resources and risks in organizations and in the public space. Today, environmental management is not only a topic of nature conservation. It includes the fulfillment of legal obligations, accident prevention, waste and water management, health protection, landscape decision-making and communication with the public. Therefore, the program connects natural, legal, safety and management aspects.

The study is suitable for environmental and sustainability workers, managers of production and service organizations, employees of local governments and state administration, experts in water, forestry or waste management, food, safety and control workers, as well as for consultants and project managers. It will be used by people who need to assess the impact of activities, implement preventive measures, prepare projects or align operational decisions with the requirements of the law and the expectations of stakeholders.

The professional core consists of ecological principles of forest ecosystems, landscape, water resources and their quality, waste management and food security. Environmental law of the Slovak Republic and the European Union creates a regulatory framework, while environmental risks, accidents and safety develop preparedness for prevention and response. Criminology and criminology in environmental science draw attention to the detection, documentation and broader context of unlawful conduct. Environmental ethics helps to balance economic, social and ecological interests.

Systematic environmental management relies on a cycle of identifying impacts, setting targets, implementing measures, measuring results, and continuous improvement. The same logic is also used by international environmental management systems, such as the ISO 14001 framework. For an organization, this means translating a general commitment to environmental protection into concrete processes, responsibilities, indicators, and responses to deviations. Therefore, the student learns to perceive water, waste, biodiversity, accidents, and compliance with the law as interconnected areas of management, not as isolated obligations.

Management subjects complement the professional content with leadership, people management, motivation, teamwork, coaching approach, GDPR, crisis communication and mental hygiene. The graduate should be able to identify an environmental problem, name the sources and entities concerned, evaluate risks and prepare a feasible plan of measures. The knowledge can be used in the creation of an internal environmental system, waste or water policy, project assessment, emergency preparedness, communication with authorities or the public, and in the implementation of more sustainable processes. The methodology of the final thesis allows for the processing of a specific environmental challenge from one’s own practice systematically and with an emphasis on measurable benefits.

GRADUATE PROFILE

A graduate of the MEM program understands ecological principles, environmental law and ethics, as well as the context of landscape protection, forest ecosystems, water resources, food security and waste management. He/she is able to identify environmental risks, accidents and safety problems, take into account the context of environmental crime and propose appropriate preventive or organizational measures. In the preparation and implementation of environmental projects, he/she connects professional knowledge with leadership of people, crisis communication and responsible decision-making. He/she is able to communicate results and recommendations in a comprehensible way to the management of the organization, partners and the public.

DESCRIPTION OF THE POSTGRADUATE STUDY PROGRAM

  • The study begins every year in February and September, lasts 1 academic year (2 semesters), in full-time or distance (online) form.
  • Complete study materials necessary for study are provided by the Institute.

  • The completion of the study is the defense of the student’s final thesis.

After graduation, the graduate obtains in cooperation with a foreign partner:

  • Certificate with international accreditation on the completion of postgraduate studies in the Slovak language with the listed subjects, number of hours and credits completed by the graduate.
  • Certificates with international accreditation on the completion of the educational program in English, which inform about the main professional competencies that the graduate has acquired.
At the same time, we contact selected companies (about 30 top companies in Slovakia) regarding your successful completion of the educational program.
