The Master of Public Health (MPH) is a prestigious professional study with a significant managerial overlap focused on population health, disease prevention and management of measures that affect entire communities. While clinical medicine primarily addresses the needs of the individual patient, public health monitors the incidence of diseases, risk and protective factors, working and living conditions, availability of services and emergency preparedness. Therefore, the program connects epidemiology, population health, hygiene, legislation, financing and management.

The study is suitable for workers in public health, health care facilities, hygiene and epidemiology, occupational health professionals, managers, employees of insurance companies, local governments, schools, non-profit organizations and public institutions. It will be used by people who prepare preventive programs, monitor health indicators, communicate risks or make decisions about resources and services. The program expands professional knowledge, but does not replace the qualifications required by law to perform a medical or other regulated profession.

The study plan includes epidemiology and its methodology, population health, basics of public health, hygiene, occupational health and occupational diseases. Legislation in healthcare, the health care system, its financing, financial management and the Slovak DRG system help to understand the organizational and economic environment. Ethics in working with clients, GDPR, leadership, human resources, teams, motivation and coaching approach support responsible work with people and information. Crisis management and communication are important in epidemics, environmental threats and other events with an impact on health.

The basic functions of public health include monitoring health status and risks, prevention and health promotion, protection against threats, emergency preparedness, and system management and coordination. The individual steps follow each other: high-quality data will allow for prioritization, appropriate intervention needs resources and partners, and its outcome must be evaluated. MPH therefore supports a population-based view and evidence-based decision-making. At the same time, it develops the ability to communicate uncertainty and recommendations so that they are understandable to different groups of the population.

The graduate should be able to interpret the basic population and epidemiological contexts, identify a health problem, propose a preventive or organizational measure and clearly communicate its importance. The knowledge can be used in health promotion programs, risk surveillance, capacity planning, employee health protection, service evaluation or preparation for crisis situations. The methodology of the final thesis allows for the systematic processing of a specific problem of a population or organization. MPH thus creates an interdisciplinary basis for decision-making that combines data, prevention, management and public interest.

GRADUATE PROFILE

A graduate of the MPH programme understands the basics of epidemiology, population health, hygiene, occupational health and prevention, as well as the functioning and financing of the health system. He/she is able to interpret basic epidemiological and population data, identify health risk and propose appropriate preventive or organisational measures. When preparing programmes and services, he/she takes into account legislation, ethics, financial possibilities, the DRG system, the needs of target groups and understandable risk communication. He/she applies his/her knowledge within the limits of his/her professional role and in cooperation with qualified health and public health professionals.
